You might think it’s a little early to start talking about Homecoming.  After all, last weekend felt like mid-July.  But did you know that we are now finishing our eighth week of classes?  The semester is half way over—and the weather is starting to show it.  For the first time in six months I substituted shorts with pants, and today my apartment maintenance crew spent hours raking up leaves.  It’s fall.  And whether we like it or not, this semester is flying by.  So if you are one of those people who thought, “It’s a little early to start talking about Homecoming,” I hope I’ve proved you wrong.

Officially, UNCG’s Homecoming starts on Monday, October 21st, and ends on the 27th.  I’d like to point out a few events that I think are particularly interesting.  On Wednesday the 23rd, at seven pm,PIC13061 Student Convocation the Campus Activities Board is hosting a comedy show with free admission.  So if you have at least zero dollars in your wallet and a decent sense of humor make your way to the Aycock Auditorium and enjoy the show.  On Thursday, an illusionist will be performing in the Elliot Center Auditorium.  Once again, the ticket price is zilch.  With these and so many other fun free events why stay at home?

University of North Carolina at GreensboroThe big events will start Friday night.  At six pm, you have a couple of sports-related choices: women’s volleyball and soccer.  There will be a twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of the women’s soccer club at halftime of, you guessed it, the soccer game.  But you might not want to stay too long because at seven pm the MFA Writing program is hosting an alumni reading in the UNCG Faculty Center.  Not that I’m trying to steer you in any particular direction, but if you ask me to write your Homecoming schedule, you would see this on your list.

And now for Saturday.  At one pm, the UNCG football team will take on the two-time defending national champion, Alabama’s Crimson Tide.  OK, bad joke.  But I had to see if you were paying attention.  There are a ton of fun things to do on Saturday.  Even now, as I look through the list of about 25 events, I’m impressed with the effort UNCG put into our Homecoming.  I won’t name them all, but there’s going to be everything from a 5K run/jog/walk to a BBQ, from an art exhibit to a cornhole tournament, from a beer and wine garden to a fireworks show.  For a complete list of events, make sure you check out the full schedule here: http://homecoming.uncg.edu/hmcmng/2013/schedule/.

Also, the first edition of the 2013-2014 Horizons publication will be released on Saturday, October 26, at The Graduate School’s tent reception.  This semester we are highlighting recent UNCG graduates who are making a tremendous difference in their communities.  Please stop by, say hello, and get a free copy of the publication.  Three of the articles are written by yours truly, so if you like these blogs, then you definitely need to get one.  And if you haven’t liked these blogs, then you probably aren’t reading this sentence.
